Positioned on a narrow spit of land jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean, Cadiz has been the home of the Spanish navy since the 18th century. Founded 3000 years ago by the Phoenicians, Cadiz is the oldest city in Western Europe. The beautiful Gothic Cathedral of La Giralda can be found in the Jewish quarter of Santa Cruz which is renowned for its array of whitewashed house and scented Bougainvillea.

Malta. is a Mediterranean island of huge historical importance, influenced by many great empires. The capital fortress city of Valletta, described as an open-air museum, is mainly Baroque in character having been built in the 16th century by the Order of St John of Jerusalem. It offers some of Europe’s finest palaces, churches, and works of art. Valletta harbour is surrounded by cream coloured buildings and twisting streets.

Heraklion. is an ideal starting point for visitors to explore the many sights of this beautiful Greek island. Visit the Venetian Walls, or the Fountain of Morosini close to the aromatic fruit and vegetable market. The shops range from the chic boutiques, to herb shops and souvenirs stores. Alternatively, sit in a local café or taverna and watch the world go by Greek-style!

Day 10: Piraeus (Athens)

Athens is one of the world’s centres of archaeological research, and home to famous historical sites such as the Acropolis and the Temple of Olympian Zeus, as well as the National Archaeological Museum. It also has a thriving nightlife as well as lively markets, luxurious Hammam baths, and stunning views of the city from the peak of Mount Lycabettus.

Day 11: Katakolon (Olympia)

Katakolon is the gateway to Olympus and the site of the original Olympic Stadium. Walk on the original stadium track over 2000 years old or visit one of the extensive ruins that transcend time and help you envision what once was one of the seven wonders of the ancient world, the Temple of Zeus. Other highlights include the Olympia Archaeological Museum where you will find the Head of Hera, the superb statue of Hermes of Praxiteles, the sculpted ornaments of the Temple of Zeus, and many other priceless works from ancient times.

Corfu is a lush and sun-drenched island with a long and colourful history – it has been ruled by the Romans, the Venetians, the French and the English. The Town boasts fortresses bearing the insignia of the Venetian Republic, an esplanade lavishly planted by the French during the Napoleonic Wars, and an English cricket pitch.

Gibraltar. The Rock of Gibraltar crouches guard like, protecting the entrance to the Mediterranean from unwelcome visitors. Many countries have fought for control of this passage between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean, resulting in a vibrant cultural melting pot. Narrow steep lanes are busy with English tourists, veiled Moroccan women in caftans, and Spanish residents. Stroll below the white cliffs among a profusion of palm, pine, and cypress. Go below to Gibraltar’s caves, or up above to see the Rock’s Barbary apes.
